Does anyone else feel like their closet is in desperate need of a spring refresh? After so many months being bundled up in layers upon layers, it’s time to dress a little lighter and I was so excited to find the cutest ensemble for a special mommy-daughter outing. Everything that Dessa and I are wearing (minus that cute little bow) are from Walmart. The fashions were comfortable, affordable, and just our style – and if you read my monthly style box reviews you know how picky I can be about the clothes I purchase! Walmart Fashion has been highlighting fashions for the entire family with its We Dress America campaign and I love how they offer spring styles for everyone. Throw in the free 2-day shipping and returns for purchases over $35 and you’ve got one happy customer.
Dessa and I have practically been climbing the walls of the house, desperate for an adventure, but spring weather has been exceptionally sluggish this year. In serious need of some warmth and sunshine, we hopped in the car and headed to our favorite hangout – the Detroit Zoo. Rather than make our usual round of seeing the outdoor animals, we headed into the tropics and warmth of the butterfly garden and aviary. The 75 degree indoor enclosure provided the comfort and heat that our souls needed.
We started by watching the butterflies and Dessa wasn’t so sure about those little fluttering creatures. They’re fun to read about in books, but apparently they were a little overwhelming as they fluttered overhead. I wasn’t complaining because I’ll take free snuggles from Dessa any way that I can get them.
It took a few minutes, but Dessa eventually started to come out of her shell and enjoy the surroundings.
She especially loved the little pool for the butterflies and it was nearly impossible to keep her hands out of the water.
Just in case you’re wondering, this adorable striped green dress is not maternity. I love that the women’s sleeveless knit dress from Time & True was soft, comfortable, roomy, and had enough coverage to accommodate my growing baby bump. It also had pockets – which is my all-time favorite dress feature. The sleeveless style will help it transition effortlessly into summer, but for now it layered beautifully with the women’s denim jacket. Both pieces are roomy, so I highly recommend sizing down. I wore a size small in both and had a little room to spare.
Once we were done checking out the butterflies, it was time for a quick stroll through the zoo’s Matilda Wilson Free-Flight Aviary. This was definitely Dessa’s kind of place. The birds may have been bigger, but they didn’t come as close as the butterflies, which made my sidekick very happy.
I am so looking forward to having a baby in the house again this fall, but I don’t want to rush this season. Our special Mommy-Dessa days are limited and I am trying to cherish every single moment of time we have for just the two of us.
In case you were wondering, all of my accessories are also from Walmart! I love the roominess of the Time and Tru Isla Top Handle bag – it’s great for stashing treats, diapers, and wipes along with my usual purse necessities. I bought the brown ballet flats in store, but you can purchase a pair online in black or metallic.
The birds were pretty cool, but Dessa’s absolute favorite part of the aviary were the displays that provided pictures of each species of bird in the habitat. The signs were shaped like a star and rotated in a circle, which made them awesome in the eyes of my toddler.
My favorite part was sneaking extra kisses.
Dessa’s two-piece outfit from Wonder Nation is currently out of stock on Walmart.com, but they have an adorable chambray dress and similar two-piece chambray outfit that I think are equally adorable. Dessa has tried on a lot of sandals at home this season, which hasn’t always been easy for a girl who is only accustomed to wearing socks with her shoes, but these little pink sandals went on without so much as a whine.
We had a great trip to the zoo and I’m now more eager than ever for 70+ degree days to arrive. At least we had a good excuse to wear our new spring clothes!

Special thanks as always to photographer extraordinaire Erika Christine for capturing so many sweet moments of our mommy-daughter time together.
Very nice. I am going to have to check out Walmart for clothes for my little granddaughters. Glad you enjoyed your outing to the zoo.
Dessa’s floral print outfit is just way too cute!
