I’ve contained my excitement for the upcoming Netflix release of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life for long enough. I thought I was doing a pretty good job of holding it all in – until today. The world got it’s first peek of footage from the show’s reboot in the Gilmore Girls Trailer that dropped earlier today. I haven’t been this dizzy with anticipation since the release of the trailer for the first Sex and the City movie. Needless to say, I’ve already watched the trailer multiple times already and I have so, so, so many thoughts. I have to talk about the trailer with someone and Rob doesn’t share my fascination with all things Gilmore, so I’m taking to the internet! I’m about to start gushing and I really, really need someone to experience all the feels with me. So, please, please chime in with your thoughts in the comments. Let’s get a little crazy together. (<– See what I did there?)
Oh my gosh, where to begin!

Let’s start with Luke and Lorelai
I’ve been wondering for weeks about the state of Luke and Lorelai in the new series. I’ve been rewatching the series for the past few months in anticipation of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. (If you can believe it, I just saw the finale tonight. How’s that for timing?!?) As I’ve been watching through the Lorelai/Christopher/Luke love triangle that dominated the final season, I was hoping and praying that any possibility of a Lorelai and Christopher romance would finally be squashed forever. There isn’t a single sign of Christopher’s presence in the trailer, which I am so excited about. I know Lorelai has a history of sabotaging her relationships, but I am hopeful that she has finally grown out of that phase.
We don’t see much of Luke in the trailer, but we do see him standing quite comfortably in the Lorelai’s kitchen yelling at Lorelai and Rory about their food choices. Best of all, he’s still wearing the blue hat that Lorelai gave him back in season 1. I studied Lorelai’s hands in the trailer looking for a wedding ring. I saw a simple gold band on her right hand at one point, but no bling on her left hand. Lorelai gives a hint in the trailer that she’s feeling some type of restlessness or feels called in some new direction, but every great story needs a little bit of conflict. I’m ok with uneasiness, as long as Luke and Lorelai stay together. Please, dear God, do not let them break up again! I don’t even care if they’re not married. I just want them to be together and happy!
And What About Rory?
Here’s what we know about Rory. She seems to be suffering from the same type of circumstances that many millenials find themselves in: jobless, wondering where to go next, and single. And I kind of love how authentic it feels. She studied journalism and we know that the transfer of news and information is changing dramatically. I also love that she is over the age of 30 and appears to still be single because she spent her twenties chasing her dreams. Even though she’s typically a type-A girl with a plan, this is not the first time Rory Gilmore has felt overwhelmed and directionless (remember when she dropped out of Yale?) She came out ahead once and I am sure she will do it again.
Dean, Jess and Logan
Each of Rory’s three previous romances will at least make an appearance in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Jess Mariano gets the most screen time in the trailer. It seems as though he and Rory have maintained some kind of contact over the years and are catching up while she vents about her current predicament. We also catch a glimmer of Dean standing in Doosey’s Market (after all this time, where else would you expect to see Dean?). We also see a seemingly well-to-do and happy Logan Huntzberger. Despite the reappearance of Rory’s old boyfriends, I got the vibe that she will be decidedly single for the bulk of these episodes.
Richard and Emily
Ever since the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was announced, we knew the writers would have to account for the real-life death of Edward Hermann in some way. I love that the trailer’s first acknowledgement of Richard Gilmore’s passing was a light-hearted tease of the (literally) larger-than-life oil painting that Emily Gilmore had commissioned for her home. The heartbreak of the event sunk in a few moments later and my eyes teared up again as all three generations of Gilmore women expressed their grief.
Of course, it’s not all dark clouds and sadness for Emily. I literally laughed out loud to see that Emily will embrace the uber-trendy KonMari method of tidying up that Rob and I wholeheartedly employ in our home.
And did you see that Emily is wearing a t-shirt and jeans while she tidies up her house? JEANS! I never thought I’d see the day and it makes me wonder what other changes Emily Gilmore embraces throughout the series.
Paris and Sookie and Lane
Can we all just rejoice in the fact that the three Gilmore Girls BFFs are all returning for A Year in the Life. Things were touch-and-go for a while as everyone waited to see if Melissa McCarthy had time in her schedule to reprise her role as Sookie St. James. Thanks to the trailer, we now have verifiable proof that Sookie is back and I am so glad to see the return of my favorite Melisssa McCarthy character. I also loved seeing Paris gracing the halls of Chilton and Lane back to rocking out on her drum set.
And the Rest of Stars Hollow
My heart melted a little to see the return of so many of the smaller Stars Hollow residents sprinkled throughout the trailer: Taylor Doosey, Michel, Lane, Kirk, Babette … so many others. I didn’t catch a glimpse of Zack or Miss Patty, but I’m feeling very hopeful that they will return to the screen as well for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
So Many Questions!
I haven’t read a single spoiler for the series and I have no intention of ruining any of the fun before my epic television binge on November 25. So what do you think the next year has in store for the Gilmore Girls?
Do you think Rory meet “the one?”
Can we successfully avoid any romantic moments between Lorelai and Christopher?
What about Luke’s daughter, April Nardini? Do you think we will see anything of her in the new series?
What do you think the infamous last four words of the series will be?
Does Anyone Watch with their Mom?
I love how Gilmore Girls is a show about mother-daughter relationships. Do you watch the show with your mom? If my Mom watched Netflix, I would totally stop over at her house and binge watch with her. I know she would love the show as much as I do. As much as I hate spending money on DVDs, I might just have to splurge and invest in the first season on DVD so my mom can experience the magic of Gilmore Girls for herself. Plus, it would give me an excuse to talk about the show with a first-timer.
Fun Fact: my mom sends me a text every time she reads a new blog post.
Yes, mom, you seriously NEED to watch this show. You make the popcorn. I’ll bring the DVDs!
Dean, Jess, or Logan?
I just have to ask, if you knew that Rory was going to end up with one of her past loves, which one would you choose? I’m #teamJess all the way. He seemed to grow up and get his act together light years before the other two. (My vote may or may not be influenced by Milo Ventimiglia’s role in This is Us – my latest TV obsession).
PS- How awesome is my new Honorary Gilmore Girls t-shirt. I plan to watch it while I binge watch all 6 hours of the new series on November 25!
PPS- Have you discovered the Town of Stars Hollow website? I stalk it daily searching for clues about the new episodes!
Ok, that really is all for now.
Please indulge my need to talk about all things Gilmore in the comments.
