Here we are at the first of the month and I’m excited to change things up a tiny bit by sharing a Trunk Club review with you today. If you’re a regular blog reader, you might be a bit confused since I usually reserve the first day of the month for my Stitch Fix reviews, with a Trunk Club review occasionally mixed in as a mid-month treat. But you probably also know that I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with new online styling services. There are so many great services (which I continue to discover) that my budget can’t keep up with a stream of clothing deliveries arriving on my doorstep. So rather than go broke getting monthly shipments from all of them, I’ve decided to rotate my fashion posts at the beginning of the month. This month, I’m overjoyed to share a peek into my latest Trunk Club delivery. (Don’t worry – Stitch Fix will be back again next month.)
This post contains affiliate links, including my Trunk Club referral link. I earn a small commission and/or Trunk Cub credit each time someone makes a purchase through one of my links, which helps to support the blog. I hope you love today’s post!
Before I get into this month’s review, it’s worth noting that Trunk Club is not historically my favorite clothing delivery service. I find that my stylists sometimes struggle to stay within my price limit and some of the clothes that come my way just don’t look all that nice when I try them on. My Stitch Fix stylist usually does a much better job of nailing my personal style and thoughtfully selecting pieces for me to try on. But then the whole world flipped upside down and my new Stitch Fix stylist was the one struggling to understand my clothing needs, while my Trunk Club stylist hit the nail on the head. (Spoiler alert: My latest Stitch Fix box was a home run – which will hit the blog on December 1 and I just sent a Trunk club box back without keeping a single item from it. So it appears that things have flipped back to where they once were.)
One more piece of information before we dive in too deep: I received this Trunk Club shipment late this summer. I know, I know … that’s kind of a long time ago. But it was at least late summer. And the advantage of waiting so long to finally share the review with you is that I can let you know what I really think of the pieces I kept now that I’ve had time to wear them. Sadly, one item that I kept has never been worn since I first tried it on. Even though I still haven’t worn one of the items from my Trunk, I kept seven out of the twelve clothing items sent my way – which is a great ratio of loved items for any style box. It really was a great Trunk and I can’t wait to show you what came my way.
Control Top High Waist Leggings
I decided to keep this pair of Control Top High Waist Leggings and I got quite a bit of use out of them. As much as I loved the compression fit, I didn’t care for the way the top seam of the leggings dug into my midsection. The seam was so tight that it left a red ring around my stomach when I took them off. I found myself eager to peel them off after a long day so I could trade them for yoga pants or a basic pair of Hue leggings.
On a positive note, at least I didn’t pay full price for these! Control Top High Waist Leggings from Lyssé usually sell for $60, but they were on sale at Nordstrom when I checked out. Trunk Club has a great policy of honoring sale prices of all items in their Trunks when customers make a purchase – which meant that I was able to save $12 on my leggings – which was pretty great!
I recently discovered Spanx Look at Me Now leggings (which are also available at Nordstrom) and I am in love! The Spanx leggings have the same compression goodness that keeps everything held in, but there isn’t an uncomfortable seam at the top. There’s no more red mark or discomfort and I actually have worn my Spanx leggings to bed after a long comfy day. They are just so good, I never want to take them off.
Even though I purchased the Lyseé Control Top High Waist Leggings, they have become the ones I wear when I don’t have any other options available. I really don’t recommend them. If you’re looking to invest in a new pair of high-quality leggings, get the Spanx ones instead.
Raw Edge Scoop Neck Tee
One item I kept from my Trunk Club shipment that I absolutely love was the Raw Edge Scoop Neck Tee from BP. I’ll admit that this top was a tiny bit shorter and a touch clingier than I usually like to wear, but it was so soft and incredibly comfortable to wear. It’s the perfect top to layer over a plain white tank and wear with leggings around the house. Or, if I’m feeling really fancy, I can throw on a scarf and a pair of riding boots and leave the house looking like someone who really made an effort (even though I really just found a way to wear leggings and a t-shirt in a socially acceptable way).
RECREATE THE LOOK
I’ve already gotten tons of use from this top and I’m so happy I kept it. Unfortunately, the top is completely sold out on Nordstrom and I can’t even find it in a different color – which is such a bummer! I adore the “Gray Bark” color and did find a BP plaid top in the same shade. Click here to check it out.
We the Free January Tee
Since I am always looking for an excuse to wear leggings, I was thrilled to see a legging-friendly tunic included in my Trunk. The mustard We the Free January Tee from Free People had so much going for it. The top had fitted sleeves with plenty of fabric to accommodate my long arms and I loved that the flowy top was flattering and didn’t cling to any areas that I’m not in the mood to flaunt.
The top was easy to style with a pair of black leggings (these are my favorite) and brown riding boots (mine are old, but I love this pair). Even though the January tee looks great on its own, I realized after I shot these photos that it looks even more stunning with a pop of lace from a Grace & Lace top extender layered underneath. You’re just going to have to trust me on this one. I have been wearing my extender under the January tee (yup, I kept it) and it’s the perfect combo.
Scarves are my absolute favorite accessory because they instantly transform a top and create so many new looks and outfit possibilities. I added an old floral scarf from my closet (similar here) and it made the mustard top look completely different. Believe me, there are plenty more scarves where this one came from and I’ve had a lot of fun mixing them with the January tee.
Nordstrom still carries the January Tee, but the mustard color is no longer available. There are still lots of other great colors in stock, though. I highly recommend grabbing one while you still can.

V-Neck Tunic
I’m telling you, this was such a great Trunk Club box! Despite its very generic name, the V-Neck Tunic from Halogen was also such a great closet staple. Yes, it’s a little basic, but the striped top was perfectly proportioned to be flattering – not too tight and not too baggy. it also fell low enough on my hips to make it a great pairing with black leggings. This was a definite keeper.
The V-Neck Tunic comes in a few colors, but I especially love the black and white stripe – the stripes are a nice width and are a little more interesting than a plain solid shirt. I styled the tunic with leggings and brown riding boots initially, but I’ve found that my favorite two ways to style the top are with Liverpool pull-on skinny jeans and my black pointy toe Rothy’s (the combo is super-comfy but the pointy toe shoes make it look like I really made an effort to look nice. You can read all about why I love my Rothy’s in this blog post) or with leggings and athletic shoes (perfect for my daily neighborhood walks with Dessa).

Tom’s Sunset Slip-On Sneaker
Speaking of athletic shoes, my stylist also sent a pair of black Tom’s Sunset Slip-On Sneakers in my Trunk. I have been on the lookout for a great pair of black slip-on shoes for a while (without much success) and was so excited to try these on.
This pair of Toms Sunset Slip-On Sneakers was very snug and still not quite right. The soles looked a little too thick and I wasn’t a huge fan of the brown trim.
The slip-ons worked with my outfit, but still weren’t quite what I was hoping for, so back they went. (In case you’re curious, the search for black slip-on sneakers is still on and I think I might try the new Rothy’s sneakers next.)
RECREATE THE LOOK
Side Slit Tee
I don’t usually consider Trunk Club to be my go-to for basic casual pieces (since most of the clothes are more of an investment, so I was surprised to see a white BP Side Slit Tee in my Trunk. I threw the shirt on with my super-comfy Liverpool pull-on jeans. The white long-sleeve t-shirt wasn’t exactly a show-stopper, but it was soft, comfortable and not overpriced. I really like that it wasn’t too clingy and would be perfect to wear around the house on a casual day. I kept the Side Slit Tee and have often found myself wearing it after a morning shower with a pair of leggings and a blanket scarf (this one’s my favorite) – super comfy a step up from pajamas!
RECREATE THE LOOK
Button Front Rib Knit Top
I wouldn’t expect every item in my Trunk Club shipment to be a winner and the Button Front Rib Knit Top from Caslon certainly fell into the category of pieces I decided to return. I’m not really into rib-knit tops so I can’t say I was surprised to return this one. I layered the shirt with my favorite white tank, kept on my Liverpool pull-on jeans and added my Lovestruck Tieks. My feeling about the shirt was pretty “eh.”
In hindsight, I think my biggest issue was that the proportions of the shirt seemed off when it was tied in front. The Button Front Rib Knit Top came tied in the package and I thought that’s how it was supposed to be worn. It wasn’t until I saw product photos of the shirt untied on the Nordstrom website that I realized I could also undo the front knot. I’m sure I would have loved it a lot more that way.
RECREATE THE LOOK
Raw Edge V-Neck Tee
The BP brand at Nordstrom makes so many great layering pieces and the Raw Edge V-Neck Tee from BP was no exception! This short sleeve top was soft, comfortable and a perfect fit. And with a $17 price tag, it was too good to send back. It’s available in several colors on the Nordstrom website, but I especially love the “Purple Keepsake” color that came in my Trunk.
RECREATE THE LOOK
Henley —
And then I tried on the most generic 3/4 sleeve top ever, the basic white top was just named Henley and the designer listed was literally “—“. With a price tag of $39, I thought the top was a little boring. I get chilly easily and prefer to wear tops that are easy to pair with a cardigan. Tab sleeve blouses aren’t very high on my list because the fabric tends to bunch at the elbows when I wear them under a sweater. Needless to say, the henley went back to Trunk Club.
RECREATE THE LOOK
Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tee
I purchased a black and white striped Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tee from Madewell that came in a Trunk Club shipment last year and I was excited to see a navy blue shirt in the same style come my way again. I almost never wear solid navy blue tops because I think it’s way too much blue if I wear them with jeans, and it also seems a little bonkers to pair navy blue with black pants. But I love my striped Madewell t-shirt so much that I was willing to break that rule and keep the navy Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tee.
I think this shirt is great, but guess what? I haven’t worn it at all! It’s just sitting in my closet, patiently waiting to be worn and I push it out of the way every time I’m looking for a comfy, versatile t-shirt. I wish I had just trusted my gut and returned the shirt. Even though it’s a perfect fit and a great style, I never actually wear it because the color just doesn’t appeal to me. One of these days, I’ll probably list it in my Poshmark store. But for now, it will keep hanging out in my closet, begging to be worn.

Mixed Media Tunic
While most of the items included in my Trunk were distinctly casual, my stylist also sent a few trendy pieces my way that were perfect for a girls night out or a much-needed date night. The first piece was a Vince Camuto Mixed Media Tunic. The black, slim fitting 3/4 sleeve top was the perfect mix of stylish and comfortable. I loved the second fabric layer along the bottom, which really helped to elevate the stylish item.
Lovely as this top was, I really didn’t have any use for it. There are plenty of dressy tops in my closet that are practically untouched these days. If you have a need for a great conservative top to wear when you’re out at night, this one might be perfect for you.
RECREATE THE LOOK
Faux Leather Leggings
My stylist sent one last item in my Trunk Club box that was a definite step out of my comfort zone: a pair of black Faux Leather Leggings from Spanx. As much as I love a good pair of leggings, I’m really not edgy enough to confidently pull off leather pants (even if they are faux leather). I tried to keep the outfit low-key by styling the leggings with the mixed media tunic, a simple Kendra Scott bracelet and a basic pair of black pointy-toe d’Orsay flats but nope. The faux leather leggings were still a little too flash and were returned without a second thought.
And there you have it! Just in case you weren’t keeping count – I received twelve items and kept seven of them. Seven! I can’t usually afford so many items from any type of personal styling box that arrives in the mail, but I had some Trunk Club credit saved up in my account – which covered the cost of all the items I kept. Here’s a quick recap of what arrived in my Trunk Club box:
- Control Top High Waist Leggings from Lyssé ($60) – KEPT on sale for $48!

wear the.navy tee with brown, khaki, .gray, or burgundy bottoms
Maria Gavin says
Lol. I think that’s the problem. I don’t have any of those that fit!
Bethany says
I was going to say the same! It would look great with gray or burgundy skinny jeans! Or olive green!
Cynthia K Lasater says
Aw I think you look cute in the button-front rib knit top! The color is really pretty. I would have tried it on tied as well since it came in the box that way. There was this one top I found online worn on the model paired with a denim jacket. The top included a tie in front, but it was tucked in to the model’s jeans. It took me some digging to find the top on its own, and it showed a front tie. I wear it both ways.
The Whisper navy tee is such a nice color. I used to avoid navy tees with jeans too, but I do wear them together now with a pop of color usually in my shoes or earrings to help break up all the dark blue. I am drawn to navy tops these days.
Once you check out with Trunk Club, are you allowed to change your mind and return something later? Since you’re not wearing the Whisper navy tee, can you send it back and get a refund?

I’d love to see a review on the Rothy sneakers. I’m considering purchasing them. I always enjoy reading your reviews! Keep them coming! ☺️

That’s so helpful to know! Sometimes I wonder if people are getting tired of so many reviews. I’ll be sure to share all my thoughts on the ROTHY’S sneakers after I buy a pair.

No way are your readers getting tired of your reviews! Because of your reviews I found your awesome blog! :)

You received so many great items! I love the mustard tee! Great color for you. I started Trunk Club once, but could never make it past the selection process. The items just weren’t my style. We live in a tiny town, where we have no shopping options, so Stitch Fix is my best friend. I would love to try Trunk Club again! Thanks for the review!
Jennifer says
I love the color of the mustard shirt! Lots of great basics and staples in this trunk club! I do stitch fix, but I’ve never tried trunk club
Michele says
I love the violet color of the raw-edged t-shirt. I also look forward to the reviews!
Paige says
Great trunk club selection. I might need to sign up and try. I love the button front rib knit top.
Jill says
I think it was a winner for your more casual lifestyle. You kept some great items.

I feel the same way about the faux leather leggings. I want to try them, but I feel they just aren’t ME, and I won’t be comfy in them. I recently got a pair of black leggings from StitchFix that had some faux leather detailing on the bottoms, just on the sides of the calves; it gave them a bit of edge, which I liked, but I still felt like ME. I recommend trying a pair like that if you want to have a bit of a dalliance with faux leather. :-)
Beth Laughlin says
I do not care for the faux leather leggings either!! I am ordering the BP tee and the BP plaid shirt you mentioned in your review!! I dress similar to you these days. :) Thank you, Maria, for your great reviews!
Chrissy says
I loved the pieces you got and kept; definitely a winner! Also, I totally think you could pull off the faux leather leggings. I get not keeping them and if you weren’t going to wear them i don’t blame you but they still looked nice!

I like all the basics in this box and the great price point of the items.
