I know it’s been a hot minute since we had a chance to share new content on the blog. I actually set out to write this post at the end of September and got caught up in the craziness of Harvey’s birthday, Halloween prep, and a mountain of things needing my attention over at Kinder Craze. It took a month, but I’m thrilled to finally be tapping away at my keyboard to share a new blog post here with you. My latest style review is a fun one because it features clothes for Rob and me from a place that almost everyone shops: Amazon. We each purchased a few Amazon Essentials items last year and were very impressed by the quality and prices. We have been curious to try on more, so when we found ourselves ordering a bunch of new clothes from the Amazon Essentials product line to wear this fall, we knew we had to share them with you. Spoiler alert: We love just about everything!
This post contains affiliate links. We earn a small commission each time someone makes a purchase through one of our links. All the clothes we tried on in today’s post were gifted to us from Amazon. We aren’t a huge blog, and it’s a bit of random luck that we ended up in an Amazon program that gifts us with occasional clothing items and shopping credit. We are always incredibly thankful for your support and hope that you enjoy today’s post. As always, all opinions are our own.
Since today’s try-on features fashion for men and women, I’m going to show you all of the pieces I tried on first (because isn’t women’s clothing is always more fun to see and shop for?) followed by a review of Rob’s clothes. Ladies, if you struggle to make room in the family clothing budget for your husband, you’ll want to scroll to the bottom because Rob got some great items that won’t break the bank and will leave a little cash in the budget for you as well.
A Few Quick Notes
I like to keep things really simple with my wardrobe, so I tried everything on with a combination of the same basic wardrobe staples. My black Rothy’s sneakers, a pair of brown suede booties, a black puffer vest from J Crew Factory, and my favorite pair of skinny jeans (they’re several years old from Nordstrom, but you can find the same fit in a different wash here). I’ve honestly been wanting some brown booties that aren’t suede and a different pair of black sneakers for a while. I’m still on the hunt for booties, but I bought some black leather UGG sneakers after I took all of these photos, and I am obsessed. I shot a quick photo update for today’s post earlier this week while wearing the new sneakers. You’ll see them as you scroll through the post.
Rob and I are both wearing a size small and everything fit true to size. The only exception is my black hoodie sweatshirt, which I ordered in a Medium. I’m 5’6″ and weight about 120 pounds. Size small offered a perfect not-too-tight tailored fit for everything I tried on.
Women’s Soft Touch Pleated Shoulder Crewneck Sweater
The first item I tried on was the Amazon Essentials Women’s Soft Touch Pleated Shoulder Crewneck Sweater ($27) in gray heather. I love neutral colors because they make such great wardrobe staples, and this sweater was no exception, except for the fact that it was exceptional. The sweater was comfortable and roomy without being too baggy, and I adored the touch of puff sleeve detail at the shoulders and wrists. Amazon wasn’t kidding when they named this a “soft touch” sweater. It was warm and cozy without the slightest hint of itchy discomfort. This was way beyond a basic gray sweater and with a price tag under $30, it was an instant keeper.
Women’s Soft Touch Hooded Pullover Sweater
Next up was a black Amazon Essentials Women’s Soft Touch Hooded Pullover Sweater ($33). The hood made this sweater a bit more casual than the dressy gray sweater I had previously tried on, so I started by styling it with my black Rothy’s slide-on sneakers to create a perfect casual outfit for weekend errands or general mom life. This was such a great basic piece and an instant closet staple. And I loved that this sweater was every bit as soft and comfortable to try on as the first one I tried.
As much as I loved the casual jeans and sneaker look, I decided to throw my heeled booties back on for a little more polish. I loved this look from head to toe, and it completely cinched the deal on keeping the Amazon Essentials Women’s Soft Touch Hooded Pullover Sweater. This was one hooded sweater I could truly get behind.
Amazon Essentials Women’s Utility Jacket
I ordered the Amazon Essential’s Women’s Utility Jacket ($39) at the same time as everything else in this post, but it was out of stock and I had to wait a bit longer for it to arrive. Because of the delay, I wasn’t able to try it on and shoot photos right away, but I finally got around to trying on the jacket earlier this week, and it was perfect.
It’s hard to tell from the photo, but I layered the Amazon Essential’s Women’s Utility Jacket over the black Soft Touch Hooded Pullover Sweater I had previously tried on. The jacket was a bit stiff, but nothing you wouldn’t expect from a utility-style layer. It had a drawstring on the inside that I tightened a bit to reduce bulk and create a more flattering silhouette. I wore this outfit on a perfect fall morning outside with the kids and shot this shortly after we got home. It was a perfect outfit for the season.
I also have to shout out my new favorite shoes! I’ve been wanting a new pair of black sneaker slides and these UGGs are perfect. The black leather takes all of my casual outfits up a notch, and they are very comfortable. I mostly wear mine without socks and haven’t had any blisters or issues with pain (and I walked for miles in them on this particular day). Size up a 1/2 size for peak comfort :)
Now that you’ve been updated on the jacket and sneakers, let’s back to my original try-on…
Amazon Essentials Women’s Lightweight Mockneck Sweater
I kept the casual theme going with a light gray Amazon Essentials Women’s Lightweight Mockneck Sweater ($23). I once again styled it with my black Rothy’s. Just like the first two sweaters I tried on, this basic top did not disappoint, and I love that it was lightweight enough to wear during the early fall days when there’s just a slight chill in the air.
The Lightweight Mockneck Sweater was fabulously simple on its own, but I get cold so easily and I wanted to extend my use for the sweater beyond the first slightly chilly days. I added a basic black puffer vest from J. Crew Factory (which one of my favorite layering pieces in the cold months – grab one while you can!) and was good to go. I looked sporty and stylish and would be that much warmer around the house or out and about. Love, love, love this entire look and just wish I had my leather UGGs already when I shot these photos!
Daily Ritual Women’s Stretch Twill Trench Coat
In all fairness, the next item I tried on wasn’t an Amazon Essentials item, but Daily Ritual is an Amazon brand and I couldn’t resist trying the Women’s Stretch Twill Trench Coat ($55) on when I was scrolling on Amazon. I ditched the vest and sneakers, slipped back into my brown booties, and added the trench on top of the mockneck sweater. The result was pretty fabulous.
The trench was a nice heavyweight material that was softer than I expected. It kept its shape well and was quite comfortable to wear. I can’t resist a stylish, classic piece of outerwear (especially with a great price tag) so I decided to keep the jacket. After shooting the photos, I noticed a tag attached to the jacket that strongly advised me to wash the garment before wearing it to avoid any color transfers. It seemed unlikely that a tan jacket would cause many issues, but I threw it in the wash just in case. Luckily it was machine washable and could be tumble dried. The one issue I noticed, however, was that the bottom edge of the jacket wanted to fold up at the seam. I tried pressing it down back into place, but the crease is persistent, and it’s the one aspect of the jacket that truly bothers me. Despite the pesky hem, I still plan to get plenty of use out of the jacket on fall and spring days when I need to get out of a mommy fashion rut!
Women’s Classic-fit Soft-Touch Long-Sleeve Crewneck Sweater
I know I’m usually a neutral girl, but I decided to venture a little out of my fashion comfort zone and try on a sage green Classic-fit Soft-Touch Long-Sleeve Crewneck Sweater from Amazon Essentials ($32). This was a great, basic sweater made from the same soft-touch fabric as the previous heavy sweaters I had tried on. I changed the styling a bit and paired the sweater with black riding boots and my go-to Spanx leggings for the cooler months. They have great compression, are very slimming, and don’t show anything at all when you bend down. This was definitely an outfit I could see myself keeping in the rotation later this fall and into the winter.
Amazon Essentials Women’s Lightweight Mockneck Sweater
The classic crewneck wasn’t the only green sweater that I ordered from Amazon essentials! Remember the light gray Lightweight Mockneck Sweater ($23) I tried on earlier that I styled with my puffer vest because it was so lightweight? I grabbed one of those in sage green heather as well. It’s not uncommon for me to order multiple colors of an item when I find one I love, and it’s nice to have another casual option to wear around the house with a price that can’t be beat. I’ve worn the gray and green sweaters a few times by now, and they’re not exactly the favorite items in my closet (mostly because they’re not as warm as other sweaters and the fabric around my neck starts to bother me at the end of the day), they are great basic staples to keep in the rotation.
Amazon Essentials Women’s Lightweight Mockneck Sweater
If you can believe it, I ordered a third Lightweight Mockneck Sweater ($23), but in a much bolder color. Halloween is tomorrow and I never have any festive clothes to wear for the season. I often wear a solid black shirt, but that never quite seems fun enough. But this Black/Caramel Stripe sweater does the trick just fine. Don’t be fooled by the word “caramel”, the stripe is definitely orange, but it’s a bit more subdued than other vibrant shades of orange, which I appreciate.
I changed things up for a more sleek fall look and paired the striped sweater with my skinny jeans and riding boots. I also threw on my black puffer vest on top and love how the solid black vest helped tone down the orange stripes. This look is a great fit for my neutral vibe with just a little pop of Halloween orange. I’m pretty sure it would also look great with those black UGG sneakers.
And that’s a wrap on my latest fashion finds from Amazon Essentials. Here’s a peek at what we found for Rob.
Amazon Essentials Men’s Slim-Fit Long-Sleeve Flannel Shirt
I know I’ve mentioned in the past that Rob and I have both worked to build healthier habits this year and met our goal weight. I have had to purchase several new clothing items, but Rob hasn’t been this size in decades, so his closet has been particularly empty while we slowly build his wardrobe without busting our budget each month. I was excited to see that Amazon Essentials offers a Men’s Slim-Fit Long-Sleeve Flannel Shirt ($19) so I ordered him a size small Heather Grey/Navy.
The Slim-Fit Long-Sleeve Flannel Shirt fits Rob perfectly for a great price. It’s also soft and warm, which I know he appreciates because he frequently comments about how cold his office can get at work. The one less-than-ideal characteristic of these shirts is the length. They’re quite long and look very awkward when untucked. It’s not a crisis, since Rob tucks his shirts in most of the time. It’s just mildly annoying that he doesn’t have a choice with this shirt. That being said, we recently bought him this exact same flannel in a different color, so clearly it doesn’t stop us from stocking up on more!
Amazon Essentials Men’s Full-Zip Polar Fleece Jacket
Rob has been swimming in all of his old coats and outerwear and needed a few different cold weather options for the season, so I added a black Amazon Essentials Men’s Full-Zip Polar Fleece Jacket ($21) to my shopping cart. This jacket was everything we needed it to be: warm, soft, tailored and well-fitting at a great price.
Amazon Essentials Men’s Heavyweight Hooded Puffer Coat
Of all the clothes Rob and I tried on, Amazon Essentials Men’s Heavyweight Hooded Puffer Coat ($55) was the one we were most undecided about. Rob desperately needed a heavy winter coat that fit and the price was right on this one, so he tried it on. The end result wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t a look we loved.
Rob and I both debated for a looooong time about how we felt about this coat. We put a pin in the debate at the time and decided we would ask your thoughts in this blog post and let your opinions guide us in the decision of whether to keep or return the coat. Then life got really busy, I got distracted from writing, and here we are with a return window that is now closed. And we still aren’t sure how we feel about this coat. Even though the coat is definitely ours to keep at this point, I would still love to hear your thoughts on the coat.
Hooded Fleece Sweatshirt
The last item in our his and her Amazon Essentials try-on is a Men’s Full-Zip Hooded Fleece Sweatshirt ($21). I’ve already said that Rob is slowly working to rebuild his wardrobe in the proper size, but this particular sweatshirt suits a very specific function as part of Rob’s Halloween costume. We plan to dress as the Tiger Family from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood tomorrow night, and Rob is going to be Daddy Tiger. It’s the world’s easiest Halloween costume because all he really needs is a blue hoodie and some tiger ears. So when I saw this one pop up, I knew it would be perfect for Rob’s costume!
The Men’s Full-Zip Hooded Fleece Sweatshirt was another good-quality closet staple from Amazon Basics. Warm, soft, and well-fitting with a flattering cut. It’s safe to say this hoodie will be in the regular rotation well-beyond Halloween.

At this point, Amazon Essentials clothing items are slowly working their way into our closet and I am here for it. Rob wears his moccasin slippers from the brand every day and I practically live in my zip sweatshirt after 4pm.
