Here we are again, with a brand new Stitch Fix review to ring in the New Year! It may surprise you to hear that I rarely request certain types of clothes from my stylist. By now, Kate knows me and my routines fairly well. She knows I teach kindergarten in a private school and spend my time out of the classroom cuddling my sweet (but spit-uppy) baby girl at home. As my personal stylist, Kate does a great job of selecting clothes for my roles as teacher and mommy that usually fit my style to a T. She did another amazing job once again this month and I can’t wait to share my January fix with you!
This post contains affiliate links, including my Stitch Fix referral link. We receive a small commission each time someone makes a purchase through one of our links, which helps to support the blog.

Evianna Colorblock Sweater
I have such a heart for neutrals and I was overjoyed to see that Kate sent a gray and black Evianna Colorblock Sweater from 41Hawthorn ($58) in my fix. The slightly asymmetrical design adds a touch of interest without going overboard, and I love the diagonal spin on the traditional color block style. I couldn’t help but notice that this sweater was very similar to the peach and light coral design of the Presley Colorblock Button-Back Sweater from 41Hawthorn that came in my January fix two years ago (yes, I’ve been a loyal Stitch Fix customer for that long). The Evianna Colorblock Sweater didn’t have any buttons on the back, but that was ok with me.
This great staple sweater was super-easy to style for work. I just added my go-to statement necklace (similar here), a thick pair of black leggings (like the J Crew Anyday pants), and black riding boots. The cold weather has arrived in Michigan and I am all about the thick pants and riding boot combo these days. (I especially love these boots because they aren’t real leather so I don’t feel guilty wearing them in the snow, ice, and slush!)
The sweater was comfortable, washable, neutral and a great fit. Best of all, it was long enough for me to confidently wear it with legging-style pants and still feel work appropriate. The Evianna Colorblock Sweater made it onto my short list of pieces to consider keeping from this fix.
RECREATE THE LOOK
Nastiah Color Block Pullover
The black and gray sweater wasn’t the only pop of color block that Kate sent my way this month. She also sent a beautiful black, gray and cobalt Nastiah Color Block Pullover from Pixley ($58). Cobalt blue isn’t usually a color I reach for, but this sweater was a stunner! It also happened to be soft, washable and very cozy.
Since I was already stepping out of my comfort zone by wearing such a bold shade of blue, I decided to keep right on pushing the style envelope. I paired the sweater with the same statement necklace (similar), and added my Liverpool stretch jeans and a pair of black waterproof ankle booties.
This sweater wasn’t my usual style, but I couldn’t deny that it was a perfect fit and a great statement piece. I had some serious thinking to do about which item to keep from my fix this month!
RECREATE THE LOOK
Dayna Skinny Jean
Of course, every great sweater deserves a perfect-fitting pair of jeans – which is exactly what Kate must have been thinking when she sent the Dayna Skinny Jean from Kut From the Kloth ($88) my way. I tried on the jeans with my matte black Tieks to create a more casual look that reflected my usual laid-back style.
I gotta say, these jeans were good. They fit like they were made for me. I have no idea how I can shop in stores for hours without every finding a great-fitting pair of pants, while my stylist always manages to send perfect pants my way, but I swear Stitch Fix is worth trying just for the pants!
I wasn’t in the market for a new pair of jeans (my Kensie jeans from a few years back are a similar style that still fit great) but I would have kept these for sure if I needed some new denim.
If you’re curious about Tieks, I highly recommend them as an investment piece. I own a few different pair and wear them often in the warmer months. They’re great for work, for running errands, even for our weekend walks through the neighborhood. You can read more about Tieks in this blog post.
Rosalie Brushed Flannel Top
I love wearing all things plaid in the winter and was happy to see that Kate had included the Rosalie Brushed Flannel Top from Cloth & Stone ($84) in my January fix. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best plaid top for me.
In addition to the high price tag, the top was also tricky to style. The top was super-soft, which made it feel more like loungewear than the kind of top I would wear out and about. Because of it’s lightweight softness, the top didn’t have a lot of body or structure, so it wore more like pajamas. It was also a little boxier than I prefer to wear.
Given the softness and lack of body, I decided to take a cue from the top and style it as though I were lounging around the house! It paired great with a classic pair of black leggings and my North Face boots (similar here) in case I had to run to the car or shovel a little freshly fallen snow.
If you’re looking for a really amazing, soft plaid shirt at a great price, check out the Ochenta plaid shirts on Amazon. Just make sure you size WAY up (I own one and it’s an XL).
RECREATE THE LOOK
Candria Ribbed Shawl Cardigan
And just like that, I had only one item left to try on! The fifth item in my January fix was a burgundy Candria Ribbed Shawl Cardigan from Pixley ($68).
Much like the plaid top, this sweater was begging to wrap me up and keep me cozy, to I styled it for a snuggly day at home. I kept on the black leggings, added a basic striped tee, and threw on my Ugg slippers.
Yes, this was absolutely a great outfit to wear around the house. The only problem was the price. If I’m going to be lazy around the house and risk getting all sorts of messes on myself from the baby, I prefer to outfit myself in inexpensive clothes that I don’t mind getting a little messy.
If my budget or the baby weren’t considerations, this sweater would definitely be a keeper.

What I Kept from My January Fix
After trying on all five items from my January Stitch Fix box, I had a tough choice to make! I could either keep the black and gray sweater that perfectly fit my style and was great for work or I could push the envelope a bit and keep the black and cobalt color block sweater. It was such a difficult choice (especially since they were both machine washable and the same price!) I went back and forth and even asked Rob what he thought. Rob preferred the simple black and gray sweater, so that’s the one I decided to keep. But I have to admit, I am certain I will get more use out of the black and gray Evianna Colorblock Sweater, but the blue and black Nastiah Color Block Pullover was absolutely the more beautiful choice.

I agree with the sweater choice that you made. It’s so much fun to see what others receive in their Stitch Fix boxes. I pinned those jeans because they look great on you and I want to try that style. I hope you have a wonderful 2018!
Maria Gavin says
Hi Paula and thank you! I completely agree that it is so much fun to see what everyone else gets in their fix, as well as how they style those items!
Hannah H. says
I AM in the market for new jeans, so I would have kept those! So cute! And I totally agree about stitch fix pants; mine always fit great! Even when I don’t know what size I am, my stylist seems to!
Maria Gavin says
I have no idea how they always get the size on-point! And they are fabulous jeans if you are in the market for a new pair ;)
Vanessa says
I like the look of the maroon sweater over the striped top.
Jaime says
I love the Nastiah Colorblock Sweater! I might have to request it in my next fix!!
Maria Gavin says
It really is a gorgeous sweater!
Hilary says
I love the sweater you kept! The cardigan is gorgeous too.
Jennifer says
I would have probably returned but regretted later too!!
Ann says
I loved the maroon sweater but think you made a great choice!
Julie says
This looks like a fix I would have loved. I own those jeans and the color block sweaters are so cute!
Rebecca I. says
This was a great Fix! I love both the blue-accented sweater and the cardigan (and I already own those jeans from a previous Fix I received)!
Your Stitch Fix reviews are always my favorites. Thank you for the time and effort you put into them!
Happy New Year!
Maria Gavin says
Hi Rebecca and thank you for the sweet comment! Those are a pretty amazing pair of jeans, so I’m not surprised that you kept yours! I’m so touched to hear that you love reading these reviews. They are always fun to write and I try to make them as fun and helpful as possible :)
Bailey from Becoming Bailey says
The Blue & Black pullover is gorgeous! I tried StitchFix for the first time last month!
Maria Gavin says
It really is a fabulous sweater – too bad cobalt blue is not a color that I ever reach for! I hope you enjoyed your first fix!
Hilarie says
I like the way the jeans look on you a lot. But I love the cardigan, too. I’m the same way with not wanting to spend a lot on stuff I’ll just wear around the house, though!
Nicole says
Tough choices this time! I always admire your willpower and self-control. I would have chosen bothe color blocks and the denim!
Maria Gavin says
It was a really tough choice between those three items. It can be a challenge to stick to the budget and only purchase one item, but I can either have a closet full of new clothes or a new house – and I really want that house one day!
Carrie says
The ribbed cardigan looks so cozy!
Michelle B says
Another great fix. Always hard when there are more than one piece that are great, just wish they were all affordable. Good pick!
Maria Gavin says
My one monthly keeper is definitely always a treat because I can’t afford to keep everything these days :)
Jo says
The colorblock sweater is beautiful, and I really love cobalt blue. I like the one you chose too though.
Maria Gavin says
I tend to keep it neutral. If the colorblock sweater were gray, blush, and ivory; I would have kept it in a heartbeat! But I agree, that the cobalt was gorgeous – just not a color for me!
Sarah Duckett says
I really like most of these items. I love the cobalt blue! I just requested it from my January fix!
Maria Gavin says
I hope you get it! The cobalt really was a beautiful sweater.
Claudia Boling says
I think you made the right choice in the sweater you kept. It looks great on you. I would have chosen it also.
Maria Gavin says
I’m glad I’m not alone! :)
Nicole says
I love your Stitch Fix reveals! Love the COLOR BLOCK PULLOVER and the RIBBED CARDIGAN. They’re great colors!
Maria Gavin says
Thank you Nicole! I always enjoy writing my monthly reviews and it brings me such joy to hear that you love reading them!
Megan O'Connor says
I love the sweater you chose and the ribbed cardigan. Beautiful color and looks oh-so-cozy! Happy New Year to you and your family! Look forward to these reviews every month!
Maria Gavin says
Thank you so much Megan. Happy New Year to you as well!
Jodi says
I would have been tempted to keep everything! Great fix!
Kate Gosling says
Another wonderful Fix! I like the sweater you kept, but can totally see that the cobalt blue one really stands out. I like it best. :o)
Maria Gavin says
It really is a beautiful sweater and it was HARD to send back :)
Kristin H says
I LOVE the Nastiah pullover!
Christa says
Everything looked great on you! You have great self discipline as I would have justified keeping more! I love what you kept but probably would have gone with the cobalt blue stripe sweater. I use that as a pop of color in my sea of black and grey this time of year.
Maria Gavin says
That I can understand! Bu the end of February, I so tired of black and charcoal gray!
Lois says
I actually liked them all!
Maria Gavin says
It WAS a really good fix :)
Laura Royal says
I would keep the DAYNA SKINNY JEAN because those are super cute jeans and great fit.
Maria Gavin says
If I needed new jeans, I would have kept those too!
Ellen Harrod says
Love the sweater you chose!
Jeanna says
I love the Candria Ribbed Shawl Cardigan! Everyone needs a cardigan in their closet!
Maria Gavin says
I completely agree with the need for cardigans! I already have a favorite ivory cardigan and I wear it ALL THE TIME :)
Christa says
Everything looked great on you. I really liked both sweaters and probably would have kept the one with the cobalt stripe.
Maria Gavin says
You are not alone! I think that was most people’s favorite item from the fix :)
Kay says
The Nastiah colorblock pullover looked so great on you! It looks like a pretty fantastic fix!
Kate says
I loved the cardigan- the color and how cozy it looked!
Kim C says
I think the sweater you kept was by far the best choice! It can be dressed up or down and looks sophisticated. The colorblock sweater in the black and royal was definitely not my style; it reminds me of a wool ski sweater my husband bought in 1978 and kept for 30 years! LOL! But it was flattering on you! I’m also not smitten with the cardigan as much as others seem to be. But you always look great in whatever you’re sent, so the decision must be hard sometimes! This time, you did the right thing for sure!
Maria Gavin says
I’m so glad you agree with my choice and LOL about the ski sweater! If I had seen it, I probably wouldn’t have wanted to keep the cobalt sweater either. Rest assured, I don’t always look or feel fabulous in every single item – but I only need one flattering photo taken from a decent angle to make me feel comfortable sharing a a photo of me wearing it with the whole world ;)
Danielle Berry says
I love the sweater you kept. I have it too from Stitch Fix!!
Maria Gavin says
How fun! It really is a great, staple item for my closet!
Leslie Birdsall says
I love your stitch fix reviews and agree with your take on this fix!
Maria Gavin says
Thank you Leslie!
Sherry says
I’m a sucker for grey. I would have picked the same sweater.
Maria Gavin says
Gray and black go with everything :)
Beth Laughlin says
Difficult choice, Maria! But, I think you chose the one that is most practical for you and that you will wear the most! The blue is beautiful….. but the black/gray is classic and you will enjoy it!
Maria Gavin says
Thank you Beth!
Shaniya says
The sweater you chose to keep looked lovely on you!
Maria Gavin says
Thank you Shaniya!
Susan Jeffries says
I love both of the color block sweaters on you – and the denim! Great fit! I love Stitch Fix for their pants too. I think I may have kept all three of those pieces. I have the cardigan and it snags very easily. Cute but not good if you are a teacher. Thanks for the review!
Maria Gavin says
Ooooh, that is so good to know about the sweater (but also kind crummy for you!) Thanks, it really was a great fix and I wish I could have kept all three pieces!
Maureen says
I recently got a fix with a similar item to the CANDRIA RIBBED SHAWL CARDIGAN. I kept it and am going to recreate this look!
Maria Gavin says
Oh yay! I’m so happy that I helped inspire a look with something you already own from Stitch Fix!
Hillary says
I love the gray and black sweater that you kept! It seems like such an easy piece to style and something that you could dress up or down.
Maria Gavin says
Thank you! That was my thought too.
Maija says
I like the piece you chose!
Sarah says
You got some great pieces! I have a deep love affair going with royal blue, so I probably would have kept that one, but whichever you get the most wear out of is always the best choice! And both sweaters look great on you, so you couldn’t go wrong either way!
Maria Gavin says
I absolutely would have kept the sweater if I shared your love affair! I have a deep love affair with blush pink and I absolutely would have kept a similar sweater with pink color block ;)
Annette says
You look great in everything, but my favorite was the Evianna Colorblock Sweater .
Fran says
I liked all of the clothing on you. I would have urged you to keep the sweater with the cobalt on it because it is so beautiful on you and you don’t have much like it. However, I don’t disagree with the sweater you kept. It is lovely too. Hope you have a wonderful 2018!
Maria Gavin says
Hi Fran! I was sooooo tempted to keep that cobalt sweater because I agree that it is beautiful and I don’t currently own anything quite like it. Unfortunately, I know myself too well and I am certain that it would sit in the back of my closet because I would always choose to wear a different sweater that better suits my usual style. I hope someone else gets it in their next fix that LOVES cobalt blue, because it really does deserve to be loved!
Hilda says
I would have loved to keep the burgundy Shawl Cardigan!!! It looks great on you and love the color!
Maria Gavin says
The Shawl Cardigan was the favorite for a lot of people!
Sarah Larson says
The color block sweater is beautiful, I just think the blue is in a weird spot. Or the spot they chose to highlight with that blue is a poor choice. Love seeing your fixes each month!
Maria Gavin says
My husband, Rob, didn’t care for the placement of the blue stripe either. It didn’t really bother me, but he agreed with you!
Amy C. says
I really liked the Candria Cardigan. It’s my relaxed style of dressing. The color is pretty also.
Jules says
I received a stichfix today with the same jeans and also a pair of bootcut. Since I already have several skinny jeans, I opted for the bootcut. $88 is more than I usually spend on jeans. Hopefully they will be worth it.
Maria Gavin says
I hope so too! Most Stitch Fix pants are excellent so I have a feeling that you won’t be disappointed :)
bn100 says
Rosalie Brushed Flannel Top
Casey says
I LOVE the gray and black sweater. Great choice. I would’ve had a hard time turning down that cardigan though!
Maria Gavin says
A LOT of people would have struggled to return the cardigan!
Roberta says
I love the color block sweaters!
Sarah says
I have recently gone back into the classroom after 5 years. I am terrified of bleach. I am teaching 3 year olds so I have to use bleach constantly. I have a lot of really nice clothes from when I worked in an office but I don’t want to ruin them. I also don’t see the point of just having them sit in my closet. Any advice?
Maria Gavin says
Ugh, doesn’t it just kill you to have a closet full of nice clothes that it doesn’t make any sense to wear! I went through a similar problem while my daughter’s reflux was at it’s peak and she was constantly spitting up all over my clothes. You could try selling your clothes on Poshmark – at least that way you can get a little money for them.
Kim Henrichs says
I love the Candria Ribbed Shawl Cardigan!
Lisa B. says
I probably would have kept the entire fix. It’s exactly my style.
Maria Gavin says
It really was a great fix!
Brianne says
I love your whole fix! The last sweater is my favorite though!
Molly K. says
Love that purple sweater!
Amie says
The entire fix looks great on you! I don’t blame you for keeping the sweater you did, I am sure you will get a lot of use out of it. I am so scared of sending something back and having regrets! The sweater you kept is my favorite on you, I think it was a great choice.
Maria Gavin says
I’ve had a few regretful keeps, so I’ve become much more hesitant about keeping anything that I don’t absolutely love!
Tami says
Great choice, though I understand the tough decision! Waiting for my next fix to arrive next week, I love Stitch Fix!
Maria Gavin says
I hope your next fix is a great one!
Rachelle says
I would have kept the Pixley Candria Ribbed Shawl Cardigan in that gorgeous maroon color. It is so flattering on you! You always style your looks so effortlessly.
Maria Gavin says
LOL, I know it looks effortless on the blog, but you should see the amount of clothes strewn all over my home office on Stitch Fix day. It looks like a bomb went off because I want to mix and match the perfect pieces!
Gina M says
I love the Colorblock pullover!! It looks so great on you!!
Thanks for the chance to win!

Stormi says
I love the jeans! I’m a Kut from the Kloth junkie thanks to Stitch Fix.
Judith says
I would have kept the black and cobalt color block sweater.
Chrissy says
I love the shawl cardigan but agree with you that I wouldn’t have kept it because of the price. I think you definitely made a good decision!
Maria Gavin says
Thanks Chrissy!
S. C. says
A lot of these ones aren’t my style, but they looked good on you. I liked the color block tops.
Rebecca B says
The colorblock top and the jeans look great!
Jessica Perkins says
I really like the Nastiah Color Block Pullover, but I think you made the right choice.
Emily says
I think you kept a really good sweater. I agree the cobalt blue is really eye-catching but I’m not sure about the pattern without seeing it in person.
Laura says
I really like the sweater that you kept — both looked nice on you, but that one was my favorite for you.
Christa says
I really, really love the blue color block sweater. I don’t think it would look good on me, but it looks great on you! Love the sweater you picked. You are so disciplined to just keep one item!
Lisa says
I loved the color of the candria shawl cardigan.
christine blair says
sometimes its hard to decide, i liked the jeans with the color-blocked sweater
