Now that the wedding is behind us; Maria and I are slowly getting into a routine and we’re starting to have time for TV again! (Although, with two blogs and Maria going back to school last month, it hasn’t been a ton of time.) Maria and I have a lot of different shows that we are into (I watch Doctor Who and Game of Thrones and Maria is eagerly awaiting the return of Scandal while streaming Pretty Little Liars on Netflix), but we always try to watch TV that we both enjoy together.
We thought we’d share our top 6 TV shows to watch as a couple. Break out the popcorn and the wine (a la Olivia Pope) and get comfy on the sofa with us. Here they are, in no particular order:
Both of us were fans of Castle from before we started dating. I think the only reason I started watching Castle is because I have a bit of a man crush on Nathan Fillion (if you haven’t seen it, I very much recommend Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog; Nathan Fillion, Neil Patrick Harris, and Felicia Day singing is quite the sight), but I have come to love this cheesy police show. We usually watch Castle when neither one of us is in the mood for something really serious.
Everyone loves Orange is the New Black, so it should come as no surprise that Maria and I do, too. We watched the first episode and weren’t terribly impressed, but we kept going after a lot of our friends told us that it got better. And now we can’t stop. In a show filled with people making bad decisions, it’s funny who becomes your favorite character. Right now, my favorite is Big Boo because, out of pretty much the entire show, she is the only character who is always up front and always true to herself.
After Maria and I finished with the first season of Orange is the New Black, we needed a new show. House of Cards was perfect after we had finished OitNB. Kevin Spacey is amazing as Frank Underwood in his rise in American politics. The show has something for everyone. I loved the scenes where Frank is whipping votes in Congress, making backroom political deals and generally being a politician. Maria loved the human stories: the relationships, the betrayals, the friendships. It’s a fantastic piece of television.
We both are huge fans of the BBC’s Sherlock. In fact, it was one of the shows we discussed on our first date. If you haven’t seen it, you are missing out on one of the greatest TV events in recent memory. Benedict Cumberbatch (can you get any more British than that?) is perfect as Sherlock and Martin Freeman nails John Watson. The show’s producer, Steven Moffat, recently let out that Season 4 will be released in 2017. But, there’s more! There will be a special episode sometime soon which is set in the late 1800’s, Sherlock’s original setting! I can’t wait!
The Office is a mainstay in our background TV. I’ve seen each episode at least twice and Maria has probably seen each episode at least three times. Heck, my brothers have probably watched this show from beginning to end at least six or seven times. It’s one of the greatest shows of all time. How can you not watch it from start to finish when the whole show is on Netflix?
I will be the first to admit that I got into this show way too late and have only seen a few episodes. Maria was the one who turned me on to Modern Family and I have loved it ever since. Phil is by far my favorite character; I love his unabashed dorkiness. And with episodes like the Las Vegas episode from 2014, it’s impossible not to laugh at the antics and humorous situations that this family gets into on a daily basis.
Maria and I are always on the lookout for a new show to watch together. It can be a challenge to find something that meets both of our entertainment preferences. If you have a favorite show to watch with your spouse or significant other, please tell us in the comments. We welcome your suggestions!
PS-Maria is doing the Whole30 again this month and popcorn is a big Whole30 no-no (so is wine!) It nearly killed her to be so close to two of her favorite indulgences while we shot this photo.
