Rob and I are heading up north to my brother’s cabin for a little Father’s Day getaway. Michigan’s temperatures are rising into the mid-80’s today but I often get cold in the car when Rob cranks up the AC. So today’s summer outfit is all about comfort. And layers. And great style on a budget.

Since today is so hot, a maxi dress seemed like the only way to go. I love maxi dresses because they are so flowy and comfortable. The best part is that while I feel like I’m wearing loungewear, I look like I really made an effort to dress up and look nice. It’s win-win.
Now that summer has arrived, I’m trying to shop like a normal person and actually visit brick and mortar stores. (Crazy, I know!) I found this gray maxi dress last week and it is my new favorite summer dress. The gray color matches everything! And the shirred fabric around the waistline is so flattering. The extra fabric helps it to hang just far enough away from the body to keep the dress from clinging. And the dress has pockets. Pockets!
And PS – did you know that TJ Maxx now sells items online (including this awesome dress)? I have always loved their prices and I just fell even more in love with the convenience.
Since I get cold at the slightest breeze from the air conditioner, I added a lightweight bright scarf. This way, I still look put together, and the extra fabric around my neck provides a little extra warmth. And if I get too hot outside, I can either untie the scarf or take it off completely and fasten it onto my handbag.
I bought this particular scarf at Charming Charlie this week. I scoured their website and can’t find this style online, but I found so many other adorable options. The great thing about this outfit is that you can wear any color scarf that you want. After all, gray is a neutral.
So I’ve got the dress and the scarf, but that still isn’t enough for the arctic blast that Rob creates in the car. The solution? A denim jacket. It looks great, matches everything, and I can use it as the cool night air settles in after we finally arrive at the cabin.
This particular jacket is from Old Navy and it’s a great bargain staple item. Even in the summer, I wear it a few times a week.
I kept the accessories pretty simple for our little trip up north. Just my usual cubic zirconia studs, my silver This particular jacket , and theThis particular jacket I bought a few weeks ago (another amazing bargain, courtesy of Amazon.com)
Long car rides are definitely not the best part of any trip (although I do love that I can work on writing this blog post while Rob drives). Thankfully, a comfortable maxi dress and a few extra layers a a great way to stay just as comfortable on the journey as I will be when we finally arrive at our destination.
In other news, Rob and I are starting to look for a new home and I finally joined Snapchat. You can follow me (@kindercraze) on Snapchat to see what life is like behind the blog. I even shared some nuggets about the house hunt while we were in the car earlier today. I’ll see you there!

Maria!
Hi, so super cute? How tall are you? I worry that this dress may be too short for me.

Did you feel like it was pretty true to size? I’m trying to decide between a small and medium.thanks!!
Maria Gavin says
I bought a small and there’s a little room to spare. I think you’ll be ok if you size down :)

Thanks!!

Is the jacket you linked, the same wash you are wearing? Are you wearing a tall or regular? It’s such a nice look on you, Thanks!

Hi Kathleen! I bought my jacket a few years ago so I can’t guarantee that the wash is the same, but it looks very similar (if not exactly the same) in the picture. My jacket is a regular.
